GIS Methodologies for Developing Conservation Strategies: Tropical Forest Recovery and Wildlife Management in Costa Rica by Basil G. Savitsky,

GIS Methodologies for Developing Conservation Strategies: Tropical Forest Recovery and Wildlife Management in Costa Rica by Basil G. Savitsky,
Tropical habitats may contain more than a third of the worlds plant and animal species; Costa Rica alone is home to one of the highest levels of biodiversity per unit area in the world, and stands at center stage in worldwide conservation efforts. Within such regions, the use of state-of-the-art digital mapping technologies -sophisticated techniques that are relatively inexpensive and accessible -represents the future of conservation planning and policy. These methods, which employ satellites to obtain visual data on landscapes, allow environmental scientists to monitor encroachment on indigenous territories, trace park boundaries through unmarked wilderness, and identify wildlife habitats in regions where humans have limited access. Focusing on the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica, the contributors demonstrate the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to enhance conservation efforts. They give an overview of the spatial nature of conservation and management and the current status of digital mapping in Costa Rica; a review of the basic principles behind digital mapping technologies; a series of case studies using these technologies at a variety of scales and for a range of conservation and management activities; and the results of the Costa Rican gap analysis project. "GIS Methodologies for Developing Conservation Strategies" provides powerful tools for those involved in decision-making about the natural environment, particularly in developing nations like Costa Rica where such technologies have not yet been widely adopted. For specialists in such areas as geography, conservation biology, and wildlife and natural resource management, the combination of conceptual background andcase examples make the book a crucial addition to the literature.

Digital Audio Radio Satellite - Digital Audio Radio Satellite or DARS (also as SDARS, for Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service, among many variations) is the FCC term for satellite radio, currently being made popular in the U.S.

Digital tuner - A digital tuner is a tuning device that allows a television or radio set to receive signals via airwaves, satellite, or cable and translates them into a signal the device can display. A tuner is useful for receiving digital broadcasts over the air or via satellite and displaying it on a high definition television or standard definition television digital television set.

List of digital television deployments by country - The transition to Digital television is a process that follows different paces around the world. Although digital satellite television is very common and will soon obsolete analogue satellite, terrestrial and cable is taking longer.

Direct broadcast satellite - Direct broadcast satellite (DBS) is a term used to refer to satellite television broadcasts intended for home reception, also refered to as direct-to-home signals. It covers both analogue and digital television and radio reception, and is often extended to other services provided by modern digital television systems, including video-on-demand and interactive features.

Terrestrial DTV is widely seen as an example of a technology that is being pushed on a public that does not exhibit much demand for it. The digital signal eliminates common artifacts from analog broadcasting, such as "blocking" artifacts, when transmitted with too low data rate, and may entirely fail to work in situations where analog television would have produced an impaired but watchable picture. The included papers consider or illustrate some of the error correction, DTV may either work perfectly or not work at all. Digital television (DTV) uses digital modulation and compression to broadcast video, audio and data signals to television sets. It provides examples of the "digital revolution" and free up existing TV frequencies for resale to communications operators. digital satellite map.
